Simple Good Health Guidelines for Body and Brain
It’s never too late to adopt new habits to improve health and wellness for your body and brain. Even if you feel limited by health issues such as arthritis pain, circulation or breathing problems, you can overcome many obstacles with a few simple adjustments.
Try these simple, powerful recommendations to enhance your brain and overall health, which in turn can help you feel better.
- Eat a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables. Each color represents a different phytonutrient, or plant-based nutrient, which are building blocks for your good health. Buy fruits and vegetables fresh and in season as much as possible. Buying frozen produce is a good option as well.
- Include whole grains and colorful carbs. Along with fruits and vegetables, eat more beans (including hummus, edamame, tofu, lentils, peanuts) and exchange stripped grains (white flour, white rice, sugar, corn syrup) for whole grains.
- Make activity and relaxation part of your life. Find a local recreation or senior center with yoga and exercise classes for improved fitness and relaxation. Spend a few minutes each day relaxing your mind, too, through such things as meditation, prayer, reading, or a favorite hobby.
- Consider shared medical appointments. Depending on where you live, you may find shared medical appointments for brain health and wellness, weight management, breast and prostate cancer prevention, pain control and stress management. Group appointments provide opportunities to support and be supported by others. The social interactions in these activities promote improvements in your mood and quality of life.
